Wendover (not) to Chesham

The walk in the woods was nice…..

We considered cancelling due to Storm Bert. And I looked at any options for short walks around Wendover. So it was a surprise that a group of seven set off on our planned walk along the Chiltern link towards Chesham.

Conditions were not too bad at first, and the cover in the woods helped. The wind did not feel threatening.

We crossed a field where the views should have been great, passed by a farm. And then met Bert. The next mile and a half across some open fields was cold, wet, and increasingly slippery and miserable.

The detour to look at the churches at the Lee was not taken on this outing as we reached the Cock and Rabbit pub soon after 12pm and in time to catch a bus to Great Missenden. The pub has a cafe where a hot drink helped relieve the cold, but the wait for the bus did not. There were rumours of road closures, but, whatever the reason, there was no bus.

The Church at Lee (not visited)

Waiting for the bus, which did not arrive

The option of completing the walk was rejected by all, the bonus being more time, and more food, in the welcoming pub. Our travel issues were not complete as the second of two taxi parties arrived at Great Missenden to find the first arrivals had held up a bus to take us to Amersham to avoid a long wait for our train. Our thanks to the driver, and the only other passenger on the whole journey. So our journey home was on the Metropolitan line from Amersham instead of Chesham. But it was dark by 3.30pm, not 4pm and all were safe if not warm.

A second surprise of the day was that our leader was thanked for the attempts to drown fellow ramblers!

My thanks especially to France and Mary_Jane for taking time to provide some photos.

And the walk in the woods with the beautiful autumn colours was nice…….
