Berwick to Bates Bluebell Walk, 27 Apr

Published by Morley Ramblers on

The walk is approx 6 miles with optional extensions. CAVEAT I have been unable to recce this walk recently.

Trains: Buy return ticket to Berwick. Depart London Victoria 08.24, change Lewes (arr 09.26, dep 09.42), change Polegate (arr 09.54 dep 10.03), arr Berwick 10.08.

From Victoria, please sit in the front of the 5th carriage from the rear (This will ensure a head start against the inevitable stampede of younger walkers who have a 4 min transfer time to Seaford.  And you may wish to hold on to the railings.) There is a loo stop at Lewes.

The Walk: This is a special interest walk from Berwick to Bates Farm Bluebell walk where we hope to be rewarded with a woodland of white anemones and bluebells, a café, a shop and plants stall, and optional walk extensions including a wild garlic walk. https://www.bluebellwalk.co.uk – for further info. The admission is £8.00 – payment by card or cash (exact change please)

The walk begins from Berwick station, making our way past Arlington Reservoir, Arlington village (visit to the church, if open).  We will then follow a country lane onto a busier road as we make our way to the car par/picnic area.  Single file along roads is imperative for everyone’s safety.

Lunch: – please bring sandwiches and drink to be consumed in the picnic area, not within the premises of the farm – unless you wish to eat in the barn café – see website for menu.  https://www.bluebellwalk.co.uk

During the visit, you are at liberty to remain within Beatons Wood with the anemones and bluebells or enjoy the other walks (see map).    On the day, I will suggest a time to meet at the Barn to make our way back, but you are also at liberty to make your own way to Berwick station at a time which suits you.  Allow approx 1.5 hours for the walk back.  Or you can call for a local taxi:  telephone 01323 484 444.

If we miss the hourly Berwick train, we can retire to the Railway Inn for refreshments. Or take the train back to Polegate and possibly catch a direct train back to London (but bear in mind your ticket is valid only from Berwick).

Example of a return journey: 16.08 dep Berwick; 16.20 arr Lewes 16.25 dep Lewes;17.36 arr London Victoria
