Richmond to Hampton Court

13 May. Richmond Station was packed with rugby fans, so our group of 9 walkers headed to the Green where the traditional May Fair was in full swing with lots of interesting stalls. We walked along both sides of the River Thames (crossing the bridge), then stopping for coffee and cakes at the Stables Cafe next to Old Orleans Gallery.  From there we made our way around Old Twickenham taking in the sights which included a spectacular marble fountain, Eel Pie Island and St. Mary’s Church with Dial House. 

Retracing our steps (weaving our way past groups of rugby fans) we enjoyed a short ferry ride across the river to Ham House.  The sun did not shine (as forecast) but at least it was dry and warm.  We passed Teddington Lock and then stopped for lunch at Kingston upon Thames, at a riverside pub.

For the final part of the walk we left the river behind as we entered Home Park. We were fortunate enough to locate a large herd of young red and fallow deer – in fact, we were able to get quite close to these beautiful creatures.  We reached our final destination – Hampton Court Palace – by walking beside the Long Water and under the rows of lime trees, then crossing the golf course to rejoin the river via a gate close to the Georgian part of Hampton Court. As we crossed Hampton Court bridge – the sun began to shine whilst we were waiting for the bus back to Richmond.
