Farnham Circular, 11 Nov
This is a vigorous walk of 10.5 to 11 miles with a half way drop off possible at lunchtime. There were lovely autumn colours on the recce and some good views. Please read the clothing precautions seriously and note that plans will change if we get a lot more rain this week.
Trains – Direct depart 8.54 a.m. Waterloo, 9.O1 at Clapham Junction, arrives Farnham 9.55. Please get on near the back of the train.
Cheapest train tickets can be obtained by using railcards and booking from Surbiton which is in Zone 6. (Train departing Waterloo at 9am requires a tight change at Woking, departing Woking 9.30 am.)
The walk. The morning section of this walk involves a vigorous and sometimes steep hike up through Bourne Woods to Farnham Heath Nature Reserve before levelling out to join a riverside path, providing the river is not too high.
Lunch We plan to stop for lunch before we get to the River Wey, at Pierrepoint Home Farm, which now hosts the Farnham Brewing Co. As well as beer they serve hot drinks, and light snacks including cheese and charcuterie platters from the adjacent farm cheese shop (Cheese on the Wey). We will make time to stop there too providing it’s open. Picnickers would need to partake of some goodies from the brewery and be very discreet.
Drop out point For people who want to linger there Farnham Taxis seems the best option.
Clothing and hazards Those wishing to continue into the afternoon are strongly requested to wear ankle high leather boots ( and / or wellingtons) and to bring two walking poles to help you balance across a potentially giant puddle. We continue into Tilford ( one more hour). Those wishing to drop out there could wait for a cab in either the pub or the post office. The rest of us will continue the walk back into Farnham on the Greensand Way and the North Downs Way.
The lovely path is soft underfoot, with muddy parches, it’s moderately hilly. We aim to get back to Farnham Station in daylight, for either the 16.28 or 16.48 train.
