Holmwood circular, 8 June
The Walk, approx. 10 miles:
This is a hilly walk, both in the morning and afternoon and some are steep, therefore, in parts quite strenuous – sturdy footwear essential and walking pole useful. In the afternoon we’ll go up to Leith Hill (the highest hill in Surrey, so I am told) which on a good weather day affords great views. This walk has numerous stiles, most are during the afternoon in short succession and a couple are tricky to negotiate. We’ll also have to cross through fields with horses.
Hazards: Besides cars the country lanes around Coldharbour are also used by racing cyclists so strict single file necessary, added to that some of the terrain we are walking through are a haven for mountain bikers, so extra care needs to be taken not to spread out across the paths.
(NB: There are no early drop-out points as no buses on weekends):
Trains: London Victoria 08.41 (Clapham J dep. 08.48; Balham 08.53) – arrive Holmwood 09.47 [please board train in carriages 5 or 6 from the front of train due to short platform at Holmwood].
I’d recommend you get a day-return ticket to Horsham as trains to and from Holmwood only run hourly. In case we miss our return train by a few minutes we’d have the option to travel back via Horsham from where more and faster trains are available.
Lunch: The King’s Head in Holmbury St. Mary. Please let me know by Friday lunchtime if you wish to eat in the pub – lunch menu: https://www.thekingsheadhsm.com/lunch-menu/
